I do not believe we are the dumbest generation, we may not read some of the classical books or watch some of the movies, but we are like every other human being who has knowledge. Who is the one defining what is important in today’s society? What once was important, isn’t important anymore, its time to let go. Culture in America is changing everyday, it would be silly to try and retain information that is useful to us, wouldn’t you agree? Yes, knowing the founding fathers and knowing the map as well as knowing documents such as the bill of rights and the constitution is important, and most of us can say that’s fair to know about and we do know about it. But who says reading huckleberry fin is important? Who says that these well known authors are important? What else did they do in history besides write books? Who tells us these things are important? Personally I think, Bauerlein, is trying to make the rest of us feel “dumb” for not knowing what he knows, and not studying in school what he did. TIMES HAVE CHANGED, lets not be so closed minded about the world we live in today, live every moment, and if those moments are bad then we learn to deal with them, yes, there are precautions, but some things are beyond one mans control. It simply isn’t fair to place a label on a generation where we are all being taught the same things, who is teaching us, who is providing this great deal of technology for us? Are we wrong for taking full advantage of what is available in this day in age? Lets get real! We are not the dumbest generation.

I agree with what you said. I think you made a very good point with addressing that who's to judge what novels are important. In recent years, I'm sure many new authors have come around and to exclude all of them and say they are unimportant is quite a shameful thing to do. But Obviously, unless we have superhuman powers or extend the length of our education, it seems impossible to do both. Good Job!
ReplyDeleteThis is good, I personally liked when you said "Who is the one defining what is important in today’s society?" I think that these older generations feel that it is their job to define what we should think is important and of course if we don't, well then we are "dumb". I also agree with what you said about what once was important, isn’t important anymore so therefore its time to let it go. These people people need to lay back and just let go!
ReplyDeleteAnyways good arguments and nice ending.
I agree! Older generations always seem to attack the evolution of newer generations. They always question and fear what they don't understand. While I think this generation needs to control the need to use the technology currently at our fingertips, this doesn't make us dumb. We simply are growing up with different new things that Bauerlein didn't have as a young adult.
ReplyDeleteYou are about the who is the one to decide what is important, and to answer it I suppose it is each individual is the one responsible for deciding what they believe is important. And I suppose what most believe in or believe is important is what their parents and older generations have taught them as well as a mix of their own personal views.
